Bruxism is a very common condition where you, often unconsciously, grind or clench your teeth. As it mostly happens at night when sleeping, it’s not straightforward to address. For heavy bruxers, they can end up causing damage to their teeth and wearing away the bite surfaces. It can also cause jaw pain as it impacts the joint.
At your regular dental check-up, your dentist will be able to assess your teeth for wear caused by bruxism. You may be advised to wear a nightguard to help reduce the impact of grinding on your teeth and jaw.
Nightguards even out the pressure across your jaw and create a physical barrier between your upper and lower teeth to protect them from further damage. It is often a soft guard that is custom made and fits comfortably on your lower jaw. They can also reduce any grinding noises that you may make at night. We use impressions of your teeth to create a custom-made guard that is comfortable to wear at night.
